Grief is an emotion that occurs when we lose a person, a pet, an opportunity, or a material item. There are 5 stages of grief according to grief expert Elizabeth Kübler Ross: Denial, Anger, Sadness, Bargaining and Acceptance. There are no limitations for how long one may experience a stage and it is possible to return to a stage or go out of the original proposed order.
Long story short, grief does not play by any set of guidelines or rules.
